what does a basketball coach do at summer camp?

As a basketball coach, your days can be diverse, as you adapt sessions to accommodate campers’ skill levels. You will keep campers entertained and expand their skill set by creating various games to help boost their development and confidence as well as also leading mini tournaments enabling campers to show off what they’ve learned.

A basketball coach will usually lead 5-6 activity periods a day, as private sessions for individuals. Camps may also be involved with tournaments against nearby camps, giving campers a huge sense of confidence and belief in themselves.

How much experience do I need?

If you’re not the best in the world at your activity, there’s no need to worry - you’ll be teaching kids who are just there to have fun, most will even be complete beginners. You’ll be fully trained before your campers arrive, and you’ll be supported by the other counsellors at your camp.

How many children should I expect to teach?

Campers come down to sessions in divisions (age groups). These can vary in skill level, but usually are made up of 10-30 campers. You’ll then be paired with an individual camper or a group, and don’t worry - you’ll be supported by your fellow specialists and counsellors.

Do I still get days off?

Of course! Everyone needs time to recharge their batteries after an exciting but hectic week at camp, as well as the opportunity to explore the local area and further afield. Most camps will give you a 24 hour block of free time every week, whilst some others provide 2-4 days off in a row every few weeks.
