Q&A: Working as a Lifeguard at Summer Camp in Canada

Caitlin took part in our seven day lifeguarding course in Toronto last year! She then spent the summer at a camp in Montreal, and she plans on returning next year.

We asked her some questions about her experience doing a Camp Canada lifeguarding course, and this is what she had to say!

1. What did you do to prepare for your lifeguard training?

In the run up to the lifeguard course I went swimming up to 3x a week to build up my stamina. (Bearing in mind I’m not a competitive swimmer I had only ever swam for fun.) I practised certain aspects of the course such as swimming head up within a certain time. I was really glad I trained towards the lifeguard course because I am certain I wouldn’t have passed had I not!

2. What do you wish you prepared more?

I should have prepared more for the interval training as this was a new concept in swimming for me. Being able to hold my breath underwater was also very unfamiliar and something I struggled with. As well as this, being able to carry weight in a set time was super difficult. Many of us within my group had to take many attempts to get it right!

3. What was the hardest part of the NL course?

I would say each aspect on their own was doable. But when we were having to complete a lot of tasks, one after the other, we all got tired very quickly as we were combing sprints with long-distance swimming. Being in the water for 3+ hours each day took its toll on me-it was exhausting work!

4. Are there any things you wish you packed for your course, and for your role at camp?

Definitely more than one bathing suit required!! I would also recommend a protective swim shirt for the really hot days!

5. What was your favourite part of doing a Camp Canada NL Course?

Even though the course was very intense and extremely hard work, I met and made friends for life who I also got to go to camp with. I had the benefit of already having friends when we first arrived at our camp which meant it was much less daunting and more enjoyable!

6. Any other tips?

I wasted a lot of money in my first week going out for meals. Make sure you know what equipment your accommodation has so you can plan accordingly to make your own meals and bring pack lunches!
